Christina Kimeze: Between Wood and Wheel
On view at South London Gallery – Kimeze’s UK solo debut
Join South London Gallery until late (9PM) in celebrating Between Wood and Wheel, the first UK solo exhibition by Christina Kimeze. Featuring a stunning new series of paintings and works on paper, the show reflects on freedom, movement, and the emotional spaces we inhabit.
Inspired by the revival of roller skating in Black communities, Kimeze explores themes of escape and flight through richly textured, dreamlike imagery. Her figures drift through surreal landscapes and enigmatic interiors, inviting viewers to consider feelings of otherness and the liminal space between memory and emotion.
The exhibition also features a newly commissioned tapestry created with Dovecot Studios, based on Kimeze’s work Blue Door (2024), and is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with essays by Ekow Eshun and Eleanor Nairne, and a conversation with art historian Alayo Akinkugbe.
Free entry.
